"This is probably one of the best books on the subject, in part because Larry (and his wife Kris) share exactly how they did it.  Retiring young isn't going to be possible for everyone, but with this book, your chances go up 1000%. One of the best things about this book is how they show you that you don't have to be 'rich' you just need enough. It takes the stress and fear of failure out of making it happen. This book is the proactive approach to managing your life style, your savings, and your investments. Don't trust Social Security or employer pension funds. Get this book and take charge of when and how you retire.

I interviewed Larry Ferstenou on "The Inside Success Show" and loved every minute of it. I believe in what he's teaching because I retired at 40 and I'm now living the dream life. Read his book and find out how you can too."

"While reading Larry A. Ferstenou's book, You Can Retire Young! How to Retire in Your 40s or 50s Without Being Rich, Aesop's fable about the ant and the grasshopper kept coming to mind. Although the book's initial focus addresses ways and means to retire in one's 40s or 50s, it also stresses the importance of planning for the future, so that those of us not yet retired will realize we need to live for tomorrowlike the ant, and prepare for those days of necessity; so that we don't end up like the grasshopper who met the winter of his life caught off guard."

"All in all this is a very worthwhile book. Any testimony from a successful early retiree who still likes being retired after 8 or 9 years should give those uneasy about the whole concept some relief."

"This book proves beyond a doubt: you CAN retire young. The author lived the '3 keys' described here to retire at 42. You can do this too. A six figure income and a million dollars are not required. The author did not have them. The book sets out the exact steps necessary to retire young. As a rare 'inside view' of early retirement, it explains details only known by those who have done it. This easy to read, entertaining guide will change your future."

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

28. "Well Written, Enjoyable Book On Investing and Retirement: I came across this book after thinking about retiring at age 51. It had good reviews so I thought why not. At that time there was none in stock and I had to wait at least 4 weeks to get a hold of a copy. It was definitely worth the wait!  I found it to be encouraging and sensible.

There is a lot to this book that will benefit anybody thinking about retirement now or in the future. Even if you never plan on retiring there is plenty of financial advice that makes it worthwhile. I've read many financial books and the author tells it as good or better than most. He definitely has a knack for writing and can hold your interest while teaching you what real financial planning should be. I especially liked the window into the author's (Larry Ferstenou) and his wife Kris's life to show how they did it, what retirement is like for them, and what you should plan on in retirement both financially and psychologically. Definitely worth getting, reading, and then keeping as a reference."

27. "10 Years and Counting Down: I am re-reading Larry's book, this time with a highlighter in hand. This book is for those of you who love work (or hate it) but love free time and what you do with it much, much more. I had the opportunity to take 6 months off in 2004 and to quote one of my favorite movies for my generation 'Office Space': 'I did nothing today and it was everything I thought it could be.'"

Don't get me wrong I am working like a dog right now and investing aggressively in stocks, IRA's, 401K, real estate (land and rentals) all with the goal of being done at 45. Now I might still work, but think of the freedom to not have to, or to work at Home Depot if it floats your boat. If you are reading other books on getting rich... read this one and redefine "rich."

26. "Full of Great Information and Very Motivating: I've read numerous books on investing, living simply and living below your means. This is probably one of the best because the author shares his real life experience of how he and his wife were able to retire young -- without a ton of money. He also does a very good job explaining the importance of financial self discipline, saving early and hard and gives solid advice and direction for how to invest your hard earned money. I found the book extremely motivating and was happy to get reassurance that I was on the right track."

Zoe from Northfield, Minnesota

25. "A Book That Will Pay Dividends for a Lifetime: In his book "You CAN Retire Young", Larry Ferstenou tells about his dream for he and his wife to retire while still in their forties. While this dream is shared by many, only a few can bring it to fruition.  Like most ordinary working people, they worked long, hard hours with only one goal in mind, early retirement. He tells how he was able to achieve this dream and why so many people fail. Disciplined saving, smart investing, and living below one's means are among the topics discussed. Also, his chapter on the Social Security myth is really something to ponder for anyone who thinks they can retire at any age without having a financial plan of their own.

And finally, he shares his experience in investing for retirement. This was a real eye opener for me and prompted me to make a detailed review of my own retirement portfolio. What I discovered was that I was being hammered by mutual funds with front-end loads, excessive management fees, and 12b-1 (marketing) fees. These fees were eating away at my retirement savings like a cancer. I'm now in the process of overhauling my entire retirement portfolio by switching to funds that contain much lower management fees, no front-end loads, and no 12b-1 fees. I'm not mentioning these funds by name since, in fairness to the author, I strongly recommend that you purchase and read his book like my wife and I did. The younger a person heeds his advice, the better.

This book was written by someone with firsthand experience, not by some financial wizard who can talk the talk, but never walked the walk. Before you invest for your future, invest in this book. You won't be sorry you did."

Carroll G. Williams from Thibodaux, LA

24. "Best Book I've Read on Simplicity and Retirement: This book outlines an easy to understand strategy for early retirement. Emphasis is placed on a simplistic life style, financial self discipline, and wise investing. Not only does the book advise the reader on how to invest to reach early retirement, but also how to organize these investments to produce a steady stream of income for a lifetime, a question that I've wanted answered for a long time.

Warning, there is a chapter on Social Security which is most informative, but may leave the reader depressed. Not to worry, the author's successful early retirement at age 42 is proof that with proper research and planning, along with self discipline in spending and choice of life style, one can achieve this goal on an average or modest income. He and his wife have been doing so for 11 years and show no sign of having to return to the work force, unless by choice.

YOU CAN RETIRE YOUNG! has been my best recent investment. At age 55 I have accumulated investments in various institutions, knowing I had to consolidate and reorganize these funds. Now I have a better understanding as to how to do this, and that's a good feeling. My only regret is not to have known this back when I was in my 20's or 30's. So, I hurried and ordered 3 more copies as gifts for my sons and my community library. My wish is that those who read this book will benefit. It's all up to the individual."

23. "A Wonderful Book: This book is just what the average person needs to help them understand and get excited about investing and saving. It clearly points out terrific ideas on all kinds of money matters. It would be a wonderful book for kids as young as early teens all the way to people that are in retirement. Great book Larry."

21. "This Book Is Beyond Fantastic, Must Reading for Everyone: This book, written by Larry Ferstenou, is beyond fantastic and is must reading for anyone who wishes to retire as early as possible. In fact it should be required reading for all high school seniors before graduation. It has gotten me totally psyched up to retire young. I read it cover to cover three times, each time I read it I learned some things that I hadn't picked-up with the previous reading(s). In fact using the information in Larry's book I constructed my own spreadsheets to determine when I could retire and found that I could retire in three years at the age of 52 if I chose to. It is a wonderful feeling. Larry lays out the information in easy to understand language that would be of assistance to almost anyone. My thanks to Larry Ferstenou for writing this book."

Michael J. Yanosik from North Fort Myers, Florida

20. "Really Enjoyed It: This was a very practical book that will also give you hope that you, too, could retire young without being rich. I plan to reread the book and know it will be a helpful reference for me in the next (part-time working) phase of my life."

19. "I Liked It So Much That I Bought One For Each Of My Boys: Larry really spells it out well, and in terms that I could understand. I've read about a half a dozen books on early retirement, and I liked this one so well that I bought a copy for both of my teenagers. I thought that this would be a great way to get them started on saving for retirement, maybe even early retirement. Thanks Larry!"

Mark Echols from Oregon

18. "The Path to Freedom: This book was incredible. Larry has laid out an exact blueprint to retire comfortably within 10 years of starting the plan. He shows you where to invest, where to consider moving and how to save the money necessary to retire. He was 42 when he retired. His wife was 40. They have been retired for several years. Debt-free, including a free and clear house. They are living a normal life. I really enjoyed the book. Couldn't put it down. I also really liked Retire Early by John Wasik."

Richard A. Solis from La Verne, California

17. "The Statue of Liberty for Retirement Land: Larry Ferstenou has written a wonderful book. Your tired, your poor, your huddled workaholics yearning to be free will find out they too can find a safe harbor in Retirement Land much sooner than they thought. Most of us have been taught Retirement Land is the "Land of Critical Mass", but Larry is here to show us this need not be the case. By revealing his 9 year journey in retirement he's made a believer out of me. He has illuminated a clear channel for us all. I think anyone wanting to retire early will enjoy this book."

16. "A Wake-Up Call: What impacted me most about this book was the two chapters on Social Security. Here I thought I was going to get as much as my parents and I'd be fine in retirement. Sometimes the truth hurts, and this is one of those times. I checked some of the websites recommended in the book and realize now that I'd better get serious about taking care of myself in the future. Thanks Larry Ferstenou for waking me up before it's too late."

15. "The Time to Start Saving and Investing is Now: Until I read this book, I hadn't given a whole lot of thought to retirement. Of course, being that I'm only 27, I thought you didn't start saving for retirement until you were old. How much more wrong could I have been? The author presents compelling examples of how saving and investing now is really the key to not having to work later.  Hmmmm, maybe I don't need that big, new SUV after all."

14. "Should Be Required Reading for All High School Seniors: Numbers and percentages have never been something I found interesting or easy to comprehend.  But the author combines explanations with personal experiences to make this book easy to read and believe. I found the recommendations for saving money excellent and enjoyed seeing how fast savings can build up. As far as budgeting, most people think about a budget only when money is tight, rather than applying the concept to more effectively spend and save as their incomes increase. Budgets give people control over their spending, rather than allowing spending to get out of control so that their material possessions control them.

Because of my background in real estate, I especially enjoyed the chapter on relocation, which discusses the important issues I used to point out to my customers. After a potentially expensive relocation, people can end up disappointed, unhappy, and possibly facing another expensive move. Chapter 14 will help people avoid that unfortunate and unnecessary situation.

This book is not only essential for anyone in their 20s, 30s, 40s, or 50s, but it should be required reading for all high school seniors. It would provide them with practical knowledge early in life to make rational decisions concerning saving and planning for the future versus spending everything they earn. Anyone wanting to retire should read this book."

Susan M. Saxe from Eau Claire, Wisconsin

13. "Great For Making Money Work for Today's Retirement: CURRENT and informative book with up-to-date information in making your money work for you. Gives specific numbers and CURRENT detailed information and is easy and enjoyable to read. This book is full of good common sense to get anybody back on track to retiring at a good age. Highly recommended and has redirected my retirement plans."

12. "A Must Read For Anyone EVER Considering Retiring: When I first started reading You CAN Retire Young I was confused why anyone would actually consider leaving the workforce early. I have always felt that our job in life is to give everything we could give until we could no longer move. Throughout this book Larry Ferstenou has allowed me a completely different perspective on life. He has actually retired young and, more importantly, has not quit living!  If anything his pace has quickened.

The author's writing style is one that instills confidence that anyone can do this. He teaches you three simple rules that anyone can easily follow to build a net worth sufficient to retire. He also goes into great detail about the questions you should ask yourself before you consider retiring. With so many books out there only portraying one side of the issue it was refreshing to find one that really looks at your options from every angle. This book is well researched, well written, and down to earth. I would recommend this book not only to anyone considering retiring young but also to anyone who would like to retire at ANY point in their future!"

Andy Bryner from Utah

11. "Advice That Just About Anyone Could Find Useful: I just finished reading "You CAN Retire Young" by Larry Ferstenou.The book was well researched and well written also. There are many personal finance books available (some which the author recommends) but this book is by someone who was able to retire at 42 on a modest income by following some simple principles.I think this book gives a good perspective of how anyone could accumulate sufficient wealth for retirement as long as they have the discipline to start early."

10. "A Good Guide to Achieving One of Life's Most Desired Goals: This is the kind of book I wish I had read many years ago. The detailed facts on how to manage your resources at an early age gives you a plan for achieving early retirement. It is not always easy for many of us to manage our lives with an eye to the future. But if you read Larry's book, you will see it is possible using the 3-legged stool principle, to live a good life and still attain an early, secure retirement. The investing information alone is worth reading this book."

A Reader from Salem, Oregon

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9. "Read This Book When You're Only 21: Larry F. has written an easy-to-read book that answers any questions you have (and some you didn't know you had) about how to retire when you're still young enough to enjoy it. Each chapter has many ideas on how to achieve your goal of enjoying your life for many years after you retire young. The book helps plan out a workable income for retirement years, and is so easy to do! The plan does require some diligence and curtailment of impulsivity, but the end result is well worth it. Because of Larry's book, I think I really will be able to retire in 6 years, instead of the 12 years I thought would be remaining in my work life. Thanks again for an interesting, well-thought out book."
8. "Great Book: I really enjoyed the book. It was very well thought out and answered a lot of questions that I had. I also like the way the author went into the mindset that you have to have to retire young. My wife and I will use a lot of the information provided to help cut our expenses even more. After reading the book, I don't believe we are candidates for retirement for at least 10 more years. But with this in mind, the book will help us know what it takes to be retired and we will go back to You CAN Retire Young! to make sure we do it right. Thanks for such a great and helpful book."
Ray Munroe from Santa Maria, California
7. "Valuable Information: I just finished reading Larry Ferstenou's book You CAN Retire Young and found it to be not only packed with valuable information on retirement, but also interesting and entertaining. It's helpful not only to those who are planning for their retirement in their 40's, but also for people like me who retired at 55. Larry gives a lot of details from his personal life including success and failure. I found his personal budget items and practical suggestions to be very helpful. I especially enjoyed the way he leads the reader from chapter to chapter with finesse and continuity. A good read all around."
Diane Mowinski from Elgin, Illinois
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

6. "You CAN Retire Young: If I had read this book sooner I could have retired sooner! I found lots of good doable ideas to implement immediately in my own life. Larry Ferstenou has authored a real treasure trove here. If you work for a living and you'd rather not, BUY THIS BOOK!"

Susan Buchanan, California

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5. "This Book Tells It Like It Is: This book tells it like it is. You can retire young and you don't have to figure out how to do it on your own because the author and his wife have already done it. I would have never believed that two people earning less than $48,000 per year could pull it off.  But the author doesn't hide anything. He tells how much they earned, how much they saved, how they saved it, and how much they're spending while retired. This is the first retirement book that didn't have me guessing about all those things. I probably won't be able to retire for another 15 years, but I know now that if I follow the recommendations in the book, I can give myself the option of exiting early. And that's a very good feeling."
A Reader from Nevada
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. "This Book Should Be Required Reading: This book is an absolutely wonderful mix of Facts, How To, Opinions, and a Real Life Story. There is information and a power of knowledge within the book that honestly has the ability to change lives. I enjoyed the chapters on Social Security from beginning to end, especially the history of the program. To know the initial intent and what it has turned into will help some readers understand the outcome, the future, and why they shouldn't look to it for too much help.

As I read through the book I was absorbed by the content and it made me feel that all of what the author is saying is possible and real ― I kept thinking of applications for myself and our sons. This book is a "GOOD READ," the recommended websites are excellent, and those 300 pages came to an end much sooner than I wanted them to. If you're retired, happy, and have all the money you'll ever be able to spend, congratulations. For all the rest of us, this book should be required reading."

Kevin C. Berg, O.D., B.S.V.S. from Anchorage, Alaska

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. "Invaluable:  If I had to describe You CAN Retire Young! in one word, it would be: invaluable. This book will make anyone feel capable of achieving the goal of retiring early―without creating a continued reliance upon the author for more direction or information. The concepts and procedures are so well expressed that one easily feels confident in being able to achieve early retirement by following the author's guidelines; no one has to wonder if they are going to do it right. The emphasis and re-emphasis of certain points continually re-enforces the importance and significance of those issues: apply them and benefit there from.
As a result of the thoroughness with which this book is written, the author answered my questions before knowing I had them. I like the term "user friendly" to describe the text and format―it is so very readable, personable, and understandable. Thank you Mr. Ferstenou for a good work."
Steven L. Woodfield, Utah
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. "The Wisdom of You CAN Retire Young: It is particularly significant at this time to teach the working public the need for, and the benefits of, prudent saving and investing during the working and earning aspects of one's life. In this era when government cannot be depended upon to provide security for later life needs, it behooves working individuals to live at a more prudent level and to use wise, diversified money management on a pre-scheduled and steady basis. Mr. Ferstenou has stressed these principles in his book and has specifically denoted the way.

These activities have obviously been a part of the author's personal lifestyle, for which he and his wife have been rewarded by the financial security achieved as early as the middle years.In an age of Hedonism, it is refreshing to read of responsibility and prudent living as exemplified by this book. The wisdom of You CAN Retire Young! can benefit productive persons in achieving a financial and emotional security for future years."

Norman M. Shore, M.D., Utah

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. "Cut Stress, Live Longer and Happier: As a nurse with many years of experience, I have observed the toll that stress can take on peoples' lives. Retiring young alleviates the stresses that most individuals experience in the work place. Less stress can lead to better health and an enhanced enjoyment of life. Larry Ferstenou explains exactly how to save and how to invest so that his readers will be able to enjoy an early retirement."
